What is the book about?

Radically Rethinking Metrics: The Case Against Targets and OKRs and What to Do Instead

Methodologies for goal-setting including SMART goals and OKRs are deeply ingrained in our corporate culture but they come with serious downsides. This book evidences research and presents recognizable examples of how goal-setting can go wrong by eroding collaboration, hampering experimentation, and encouraging shortcuts. It introduces Dutt’s Law as a north star for organizations and teams: “Metrics are only effective if they’re used towards collaborative learning.”

But without goals, will you and your team be as ambitious, driven, and motivated toward high achievement? Spoiler alert: yes, yes, and yes! You’ll learn about OHLs, Objectives Hypotheses and Learnings, a powerful but lightweight methodology that will help you measure what matters, encourage experimentation to drive better results, and ultimately help every team member take ownership of making progress toward your shared vision.

Participating in the case study involves applying the Objectives, Hypotheses, Learnings methodology in your organization.

To guide you as you apply OHLs, you’ll be invited to participate in monthly meetings in 2025 to exchange insights with a cohort of experienced and thoughtful leaders who are equally keen to find a better alternative to the burdensome processes of OKRs and the negative side effects of goal-setting.

When your case study is written up for the book, you’ll have the opportunity to review it and offer comments before it’s published. Your case study may also be featured in Radhika’s Turing Fest 2025 talk!
