1. What’s the #1 piece of advice you give startup founders about growth these days?
Scaling acquisition and the team before finding product market fit is the best way to kill your venture. Small team, focused on problem validation, experiments and product work should be their single focus pre PMF.
2. What’s one big change in tech product or marketing that you’re seeing with the spread of generative AI?
You never have to start from a blank page.
– You can get an outline for any type of document you need to create as part of your work.
– You also get a list of considerations or ideas for most product and marketing matters generated by the AI.
Then you do what humans do best – leverage your past experience, expertise, critical thinking and prioritisation skills to develop the final deliverable.
Finally for those should take time to document their approaches and methodologies and best practices, the AI can also leverage these when responding to your prompts making its input even more tailored to you and your preferences.
3. What’s the question you’re tired of answering? And what answer do you keep repeating and yet nobody seems to get it?
Copywriting and messaging are not the same thing! You need to figure out the message you need to land (by interviewing your customers) before you start writing copy. Optimising copy without the messaging foundations is a waste of time.
4. What’s one thing that founders need to know about growth people that nobody seems to get?
Growth is not a function – it is a start up cross functional state of mine. If a growth person is happy to only influence the top of the funnel they are not a growth person.
